Identity Crisis, Vishnu Premadas, acrylic on paper, 2020

I create art to capture parts of me that I can not explain in words. I have always had trouble expressing my emotions towards my peers and my family. Growing up, I was often closed off and on my own. I always felt lost in different senses. It can come from being lost in a group of people or being lost in your head, alone with your thoughts. Art is a source of power for me that I can use to express the feelings that others cannot perceive. It is like a diary without words. I took this chance to create a piece that portrays feeling lost with one's identity. I painted four places where I have felt lost with my identity. The locations I have included are the temple, my old school, a swimming pool, and the beach. I was inspired by techniques used by David Hockney and Hope Gangloff. By exploring this theme I challenged myself to be open-minded. Identity is an open book, you can be anything you want to be.
