Lost from Nature, Thalia Koufidis, 2020

Nature is an area that I like to be surrounded in, to go for peace and to take a break from my stress. Life in quarantine has demonstrated we all have taken nature for granted. My image shows people the wonders of nature and how not to take it for granted. Somebody who has inspired me along the way is the photographer Alice Zilberg. I admire how she uses lighting and tone to her advantage to express emotion, which I incorporated into my photo. My image demonstrates how our society doesn’t realize they’re missing something until that thing is taken away through bringing out darker tones and shadows in the image for a darker feeling. I also added a vignette border that fades in the middle to guide the audience's eyes to the blade of grass breaking out of the snow. The blade of grass symbolizes how little we have. I want people to understand how lucky we are for being surrounded by the beauty of nature and how we shouldn’t take it for granted.
