Non Binary Diptych, 2020

I am someone who struggles with society's preconceived notions of gender. I believe all art should have a message, and that translates into how I go about my own artistic expression. I am never going to settle on creating something that is aesthetically pleasing.
My still life image explores the idea of gender and how society has a very rigid concept of gender. This close minded perspective has been perpetuated throughout the evolution of humanity. In reality, the concept of male/female gender binary is a performance that is influenced by the upbringing of individuals as well as media that they have been fed. In my image, two people are dressed in a way that challenges the viewer to question which body is male and which is female, and does it really matter? Capturing the subjects as naturally as possible in order to relate to the still life theme.
In conclusion, my image challenges these binary notions of male and female. Gender and sex are not codependent and gender is typically more fluid.
