"Still" - "Life", Jesus Alberto Garcia Iribarren, ink, tape, marker on photo paper, 2020

Can people really be still? That is the question I thought of when I contemplated the idea of “Still-Life”. It’s extremely difficult for a person to ever be still and I was curious what does it mean to be still? I wondered how I could highlight life when it is still and this play on words inspired this work.
In my work, I am looking to show the difference between living matter and what is man-made. I used photo paper carved figures and colourful designs to highlight forms of life that are never truly still. I worked with a branch, a tree, a person and ink to create a comic book-like static setting. I used shading lines and marks to show how I imagine the atoms in our bodies look while moving and the neural paths that look like branches within a branch. I kept the figures neutral and erased any defining features to show how all life is never truly still.
