Clear Realities of Blooming Hatred, Jacklyn Eve Valdez, 2020

I thoroughly enjoy creating artwork that conveys important messages and deep meaning through symbolism. I also have a strong belief in using one’s voice to advocate for what they think is right. As someone of Asian descent, I have experienced racial discrimination, and thus I attempt to bring issues of injustice forward through my artwork. In today’s society, inequality is prevalent. We live at a time where hate surrounds people of colour and takes a toll on their lives and feelings of self-worth.
Inspiration from artists Shellie Zhang and Joseph Maida who cover messages of social issues provided a base for my ideas. For my project, I found items that symbolize ideas relating to my message and then arranged them considering colour, composition, and worked with shadow and light.
I named this piece “Clear Realities of Blooming Hatred” to provide context to my work and to help express my message. I want the viewer to consider the feelings and the harsh reality of the world we live in when it comes to racial inequality.
