Reflecting Upon Architectural Importance, Isobel Morris, 2020

I love making art and have been encouraged by my teachers to expand my mindset towards creating more thought-provoking and conceptual art pieces, which so far has pushed my work in a positive direction. It was my goal this year to experiment with new media and push my artistic skills to the max.
For this project, I used photography to capture the theme of Still Life because until now it had been uncrossed territory for me. I have been inspired by architecture and decided that photography was the best way to represent the expeditious nature that exists in and around the beautiful buildings we have in Toronto.
My piece reflects (literally) the contrast between the clean, lifeless state of our city’s architecture, and the dark, cluttered, every-day buildings that shelter our lives and activities. I decided on black and white imagery to create a sense of unity, and have removed the streets and people from my original photographs to emphasize the buildings since that is the true focus of this piece.
