Still Life of Cathedral Basilica, Harrison-Skye Reith, 2020

I made the art I made because I’ve always drawn Interest in buildings. It’s always been in the back of my head, sorta stuck there. I selected a building because to me it is a good representation of still life. Unlike cars or people, buildings don’t move. They stand through time. My goal was to try to capture the essence of a building to perfectly represent still life. The building is old and unique. The detail is captivating and draws the viewer in. It truly stands alone. I want the viewer to feel captivated by this building; hopefully, the same way I did.
Me and my family would be driving up the mountain at night. It would be dark. And for some reason Pink Floyd’s “hey you” would be playing. It helped create a feeling of dread and discomfort, like someone’s watching. And off in the distance, there was a building that would stand by itself. The lighting would point towards the tower creating a sinister emphasis. It looked scary, like that’s where Bloody Mary would be. Waiting.
