Party Glasses, Haley Varone-Evans, 2020

When I think of still life I think of something that has no movement but is still alive. This brings my mind straight to a glass of water. Water can be entirely still but it is also a living thing. I began this project by taking reference pictures of a glass of water half-full. I was inspired by the paintings of Claude Monet and planned to take a classical approach to still life. This led me to be inspired by Andy Warhol’s still life polaroids, unlike Monet, he has a more abstract approach to still life with objects placed in specific ways to create an exciting photo. I tried to mimic Warhol’s style by placing glasses in different positions behind a blue background. I also used flash which caused an excellent highlight on the glasses. I edited the photo to look like a fuzzy old polaroid. This is my interpretation of what still life is, whether the glass is half-full or half-empty, life is beautiful if you stop to look at the motionless world.
