A Bloody World, Haley Maull, 2020

For me, still life is an arrangement of an assortment of different items positioned in a way that emphasizes balance and space while also maintaining simplicity. I think a lot of people would recognize the theme as boring because it has been remastered countless times, but it doesn't have to be boring.
I was inspired by an Instagram post thanking people for donating money to help period poverty, it never occurred to me that it was such an issue due to the fact that the menstrual cycle is such a taboo topic.
I chose to use glitter to replicate a blood-like substance because I knew it would give the image a glowy effect so it would stand out and attract attention.
I wanted my piece to spark conversation about anything related to the menstrual cycle due to the fact that periods are such a controversial subject when there are no real reasons as to why they are. We must erase the shame surrounding periods so society can have the open discussions about periods that are needed.
