MAN., Daphne Liang, 2020

I enjoy producing and viewing art through drawing and photography. Especially if it revolves around surrealism, oddities, or aesthetically pleasing aspects. This lets me express myself artistically and connect with other people’s creations personally, as the process of making and viewing art can bring out more thought and resonation.
The driving force behind my work was to photograph my cherished figurine, Man, in a way that would capture its mysteriously ominous aura and evoke those feelings in the viewer. In turn, this would make them ask questions like what Man’s backstory is, why I have Man, and why I kept Man to consider it a treasured object. Sarah Morris’ work gave me inspiration for my photo, especially her use of high-key lighting and colour. I reflected this by including both natural and artificial light, a black background, and softer colours that would highlight Man’s features.
After viewing my work, I’d like people to connect to it by asking questions and considering what personal belongings they’re reminded of, which would evoke the same questions in others.
