Discarded, Danielle Egilson, 2021

In my photo, I wanted to explore themes of materialism and consumerism. These are very prevalent attitudes today and Still Life photography allows for an interesting take on them. Materialism is not just the stereotype of a rich person with too many things. Many grocery stores discard produce that looks ugly or bruised with the expectation that shoppers would avoid the strange-looking fruits even though they are fine to eat. This practice is a reflection of our often wasteful consumer habits. I photographed some of these fruits that might be discarded in order to showcase their beauty and potential value. I think they should be treated the same as if they were ordinary fruits on display.
